We are looking for a bank staff member in Downham Market, PE38 9SW

We wish to recruit a well-presented, enthusiastic and caring individual to join our friendly and professional nursery team, who has a strong passion for developing outstanding childcare and children’s learning.

The successful applicant will need to have an excellent understanding of the EYFS and have a strong passion for a child centred approach to play and learning. As an bank staff member you are a key member of the nursery team responsible for delivering high quality care and learning opportunities for children, based on the needs and interests of those children.

Job Description

Position: Day Care Practitioner

Hours of work: Shifts on a rota basis between 7am – 6pm, all year round.

Responsible to: Nursery Manager

Job Purpose:

  • To provide a high standard of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care for children in the nursery.
  • To ensure all individual needs of children are identified and met.
  • To understand the characteristics of effective teaching and learning and implement these with all children.
  • To ensure all Company policies, procedures and operational practices are adhered to at all times.
  • To be a key person to a group of children, planning and implement a programme of activities suitable to their development using the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS).

Main duties:

  • To be a positive role model and maintain a positive attitude at all times with children, parents visitors and work colleagues to ensure that the Company values are maintained.
  • Supervise and support children at all times.
  • Recognise all children as individuals, ensuring their needs are recognised and met.
  • Ensure that practice and provision in the nursery meets the requirements of the EYFS.
  • Read, understand and implement all Company policies, procedures and operational practices.
  • Ensure that any changes to policies, procedures and operational practices are adhered to within the required timescale.
  • Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, attractive and welcoming environment.
  • Prepare and supervise activities.
  • Observe, evaluate and record children’s developmental progress and plan the next steps for their learning, and keep a record on your key children’s development for parents.
  • Work in partnership with parents and other family members and encourage their involvement.
  • Ensure that the nursery offers an inclusion environment to all staff, parents and children.
  • Ensure confidentiality, where appropriate, is maintained.
  • Attend team meetings and any identified training.
  • Ensure the environment and equipment are safe and standards of hygiene are high, reporting any issues to the Manager immediately.
  • Provide support and direction to pool staff, apprentices and students.
  • Liaise with the SENCO to ensure children with additional needs are supported effectively and IEP’s are met.
  • Act immediately and appropriately to any Child Protection concerns, following the procedure in the Safeguarding Children Policy.
  • Take an active role in nursery projects, special events and information sharing meetings with parents/carers.
  • Be flexible and prepared to help in other areas of the nursery, with domestic duties, or duties which may be reasonably required of you, as identified by the Nursery Manager.

Promoting the Company

All Employees within Alpha Community Nurseries are expected to promote the company and its ethos whenever possible, the company will attend a number of events throughout the year and as part of your role you are expected to help out at these events, we would expect 12 hours per year minimum on a voluntary basis to support the promotion of the company. This could be in the evenings and at weekends. These hours are in addition to any you may do during normal office hours.

Person specification


  • A full and relevant level 3 qualification.
  • Knowledge and understanding of planning and providing high quality childcare and education in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.
  • Knowledge and understanding of supporting children’s behaviour
  • Awareness and understanding and commitment to diversity and equality.

  • Experience of working in childcare setting
  • Have experience of working and caring with babies.
  • Experience of observation, planning and assessment and completing learning journeys.

You would need to hold a relevant childcare qualification; ideally to level 3 and have experience working in a nursery and working with children aged 3months -11years. Positions are to start ASAP.
